Spur Violins acknowledges the past traditions of violin making while boldly asserting a contemporary style in response to the changing world of music performance. Leading with the semi-acoustic Vanguard model, Spur Violins deliver a fresh aesthetic and innovative technologies that encourages the exploration of exciting new soundscapes. Proudly made in Australia from beautiful and sustainable materials. Combining traditional and modern manufacturing processes, Spur Violins are a new development in the history of violin making.
The designer of the Spur Violin range is respected violin maker, Paul Davies, whose traditional instruments are used by leading players from various musical genres around the world, including Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan Band) and Julie Lyon-Lieberman (American Peace Violin). Paul first conceptualized the semi-acoustic violin in a manner that would respect the organic integrity and proportions of the traditional acoustic violin while also revitalizing the perception of what a violin can be.
In conversations with Jazz great Stephane Grappelli, Paul confirmed the need for contemporary musicians to have a more powerful and exciting sound giving the violin a solo voice that could compete with louder instruments. The Spur Vanguard produces a wide range of tonal possibilities, from traditional acoustic sonority to the electronically manipulated voices increasingly favored by modern musicians. By easily connecting to new technologies and maintaining the traditional feel and aura of a classical violin, the Spur Vanguard is becoming the preferred choice of instrument for creative musicians.
Paul has refined his semi-acoustic design over many years creating bespoke instruments for a growing number of appreciative local musicians. In response to the demand for the violin family to be amplified, and the unique qualities of the Vanguard model, Spur Violins is increasing production for the export market. By adopting innovative manufacturing processes Spur Violins can deliver exceptional quality and consistency without compromise to the traditional integrity of the Spur range.
An instrument using both traditional and contemporary materials and construction with the express purpose of being amplified while maintaining the sonorous tone of a traditional violin.
SPUR VANGUARD SA351
The first model available worldwide is the Spur Vanguard SA351 violin. This instrument will soon be followed by the viola and cello Vanguard models. More than any other instrument in the range the SA351 communicates the designers’ aspiration of “Respect for the Past…Vision for the Future”. The body of this gorgeous instrument is made from traditional maple and spruce tone woods, varnished with a hand applied spirit varnish and convincing antique patina. The natural rock maple fittings pay homage to the earlier baroque instruments from the golden period of violin making, which paradoxically create a dynamic visual statement of modernity.
